Within 4 km are the villages of St Victor and Montagrier, each with its own Auberge, serving excellent home cooked food and local wines at very reasonable prices. A little further afield you can visit the town of Bourdeilles with its 13th century fortress and 16th century renaissance palace. When driving around the area you will come across many enchanting chateaux and interesting Romanesque churches.
Beyond Bourdeilles lies Brantome, with its beautiful setting on the banks of the river Dronne. It has an 18th century abbey, fascinating caves and many interesting ‘troglodyte’ shops with local crafts and produce including glass blowing and walnut oil. The Dordogne is famous for its many prehistoric sites, one of these Grotte de Villars is a short 20 minute drive from Brantome, here you can see magnificent calcite formations and original cave paintings dating back thousands of years.
Within striking distance you can visit the famous Les Eyzies and caves of Lascaux. Perigueux the regional capital of the Dordogne is a beautiful city with a cathedral, roman site and museum. Winding atmospheric streets with sophisticated boutiques conceal delightful market squares and open air restaurants.
A wide choice of local produce is available at the many colourful outdoor markets, which take place every day of the week in surrounding villages. The largest of these takes place every Friday morning in Riberac which is only 15 minutes from Guichard. Here you can buy everything from seasonal produce including white asparagus, oysters and world famous truffles, to hand painted pottery and wicker work.
Many other days out can be spent visiting Bordeaux, Sarlat, Domme, Cahors or Rocamadour. The Dordogne is renowned for its cuisine and wine lovers will delight in a trip to the vineyards of St. Emillion, Monbazillac or Bordeaux.
